Sapelo's historic Saltwater/Gullah Geechee community of Hog Hammock, also known as Hog(g) Hummock, is inhabited by descendants of formerly enslaved West Africans. Hog(g) Hummock is the last Saltwater/Gullah Geechee community on a Georgia barrier island. In recognition of its value, the Georgia Legislature has acknowledged that "the highest and best use for Hog Hammock is to remain a historic community occupied by the direct descendants of the slaves of Thomas Spalding.”

Gentrification (noun): the process of changing the character of community by wealthy people building new homes without regard to an existing community.
Hog Hammock residents have been fighting gentrification for generations.
On September 12, 2023, after ZERO conversations with Saltwater/Gullah Geechee residents, ZERO public meetings in Hog Hammock, and THOUSANDS of emails and public comments in opposition, the McIntosh County Commissioners voted to change the zoning in Hog Hammock.
These changes, passed by the McIntosh County Commission,
will speed up the gentrification of Hog Hammock and
cause the erasure of Saltwater/Gullah Geechee people of Sapelo Island.
